California’s Used Mattress Recovery and Recycling Act funds a statewide program — Bye Bye Mattress, run by the Mattress Recycling Council — that recycles mattresses at no charge. There are drop-off sites around San Jose (Goodwill of Silicon Valley on North 7th Street is one), and if you’re buying a new mattress, the retailer is legally required to haul your old one away on delivery. When one of those fits, it’s free and we’ll point you to it.
The catch is getting the mattress to the site. The free drop-offs don’t come to you, they have limited hours, and you still need a truck and a second person to move a king mattress and box spring across town. That’s the part people pay us for: we do the carry-out and the driving, and still deliver it into the same free recycling stream. For a single mattress you can move yourself, use the free drop-off; for anything you can’t haul, or several at once, call us.

The California mattress recycling fee rose from $16.00 to $18.00 per unit — mattress, futon, or box spring/foundation — for units sold on or after April 1, 2026. It appears as a separate line item on your receipt and funds the Bye Bye Mattress program's recycling infrastructure.
What that fee covers: the cost of processing the mattress once it reaches a certified recycling facility. What it doesn't cover: carrying it out of your bedroom, down the stairs, loading it, and driving it across San Jose. That's what you pay a hauler for. The two costs are separate.
